About Artwork: (1923) "After 1900 Metcalf devoted himself to painting the woodlands and mountains of Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire, where he was an influential figure in the Cornish artist colony. The North Country, the type of seasonal landscape for which he received national acclaim, reveals his skill in capturing subtle color and light. The broad view, rendered in a rapid, sketchy manner using a palette suited to late autumn or winter, depicts the village of Perkinsville, Vermont, nestled below Hawks Mountain.
