The picture was painted in Rome, where Bottani worked with Pompeo Batoni. It is a finished study for Bottani's masterpiece, a large altarpiece commissioned in 1745 for the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, Milan, and now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
