The Annunciation: The Angel Gabriel
Artist: Gaudenzio Ferrari (Italian, 1475 - 1546)
Original Dimensions: 23" x 23"
Location: National Gallery of Art, London
About Artwork: (1508-9) "The Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the son of God (Luke 1: 26-8). His words, ‘Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord be with you’, appear in abbreviated form in Latin on the scroll. The low vanishing points of this scene and its companion The Virgin Mary, also in the National Gallery’s collection, suggest that these panels were intended to be placed very high up. They are related to a set of four other panels by Gaudenzio Ferrari which are now in the Galleria Sabauda, Turin. The panels came from an altarpiece painted in 1508–9 for the church of Sant’ Anna in Vercelli. It was commissioned by the local confraternity dedicated to Saint Anne (the Virgin’s mother) for the altar of their oratory. Originally a panel of God the Father was displayed between the panels of the Angel Gabriel and the Virgin." - (National Gallery of Art, London)
