About Artwork: (1876) "Madrazo, a fashionable portrait and genre painter, was championed by Samuel P. Avery, a founder and lifelong trustee of The Met and one of the most successful art dealers in New York in the late nineteenth century. Avery sat for this portrait in Paris, during one of his many trips throughout Europe buying contemporary academic paintings for his customers. He also assembled an outstanding collection of prints, which he presented to the New York Public Library, and an excellent collection of books on architecture that forms the nucleus of the Avery Library at Columbia University." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
