Peaceable Kingdom
Artist: Edward Hicks (American, 1780–1849)
Original Dimensions: 17 7/8" x 23 7/8"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (ca. 1830–32) "The Quaker minister and painter Hicks is best known for his large series of Peaceable Kingdom pictures, which represent a messianic prophecy from the book of Isaiah (11:6): "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." After a severe rift formed within the Society of Friends in the 1820s, Hicks signaled the desire for peace between factions in his varied depictions of a menagerie of animals coexisiting in harmony in a new American Eden." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
