Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes
Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, 1856–1925)
Original Dimensions: 84 1/4" x 39 3/4"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (1897) "The New Yorkers Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867–1944) and Edith Minturn (1867–1937) married in 1895. As a wedding gift, a friend of the couple commissioned a portrait of the young bride from Sargent. The artist initially selected an evening gown for the sitting, but he soon decided to portray Minturn in sporty, modern day-wear with a Great Dane at her side. When the dog was not available, her husband had "a sudden inspiration," and "offered to assume the role of the Great Dane in the picture." The compelling result was soon regarded as one of Sargent’s most important double portraits." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
