Masquerade Ball at the Ritz Hotel, Paris
Artist: Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (Spanish, 1841–1920)
Original Dimensions: 35" x 47"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (1909) "Elaborate costume balls were popular among wealthy Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Madrazo painted this scene in 1909 for steel magnate Elbert H. Gary, who appears at right, flanked by his wife Emma, in blue, and the artist’s wife María. Madrazo looks on from the adjacent table. The setting was long identified as the Ritz Hotel in Paris, where the Garys stayed in 1908, but the room is based on a greenhouse in the mansion of Mexican diplomat Manuel de Yturbe y del Villar, in one of the city’s poshest neighborhoods, where Madrazo attended parties." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
