Lydia Crocheting in the Garden at Marly
Artist: Mary Cassatt (American, 1844–1926)
Original Dimensions: 25 13/16" x 36 7/16"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (1880) "Cassatt and her family spent the summer of 1880 at Marly-le-Roi, outside of Paris, where the artist focused on depicting gardens and domestic life. Here, she has portrayed her older sister, Lydia, fashionably if incongruously overdressed and insulated by a walled garden landscape. She is absorbed in the sort of old-fashioned textile handwork that was increasingly prized by the affluent in these years of mechanized labor. Although Cassatt’s experiments with plein-air (outdoor) painting are few, in this dynamic composition she effectively captured the dazzling sunlight associated with her fellow French Impressionists." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
