Lilac Dress
Artist: Thomas Wilmer Dewing (American, 1851–1938)
Original Dimensions: 24 1/16" x 20 1/16"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (by 1919) "One of Dewing's favorite themes was that of a woman seated in isolation in a dreamy interior. He was inspired by such diverse sources as Jan Vermeer and James McNeill Whistler, along with the formal arrangements of Japanese prints. The gown in this painting appears to date from around 1904, but the picture cannot be positively documented until 1919 when it appeared on the New York art market." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
