About Artwork: (early 17th century) "Many features make this painting unusually inventive: the smooth, reductive geometry of the Virgin’s face, the shell gold used to indicate candlelight, the dangling cherries alluding to the blood of Christ’s future crucifixion, and Christ’s dramatically foreshortened face and outstretched arms. This eccentric development of Caravaggesque painting is characteristic of the artists at the court of the Dukes of Lorraine in Nancy, where trends were set by the printmaker and painter Jacques Bellange (ca. 1575–1616).
