About Artwork: (1894) "Banker Jacob H. Schiff commissioned Zorn to paint a portrait of his daughter, Frieda, in New York in the winter of 1893–94 to celebrate her eighteenth birthday. She wore her first evening gown, which the artist captured with lively, varied strokes of pink. Wealthy and cosmopolitan Jewish families like the Schiffs were key patrons of Zorn, whose wife, Emma Lamm, had a Jewish background. The Schiffs smoothed the couple’s reception among the American elite, opening doors to concerts, the theater, and potential clients, and the European painter was duly charmed by American social mobility and ease." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
