Fortified Wall, Italy
Artist: Simon Denis (Belgian, 1755–1813)
Original Dimensions: 13 1/8" x 15 7/8"
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
About Artwork: (ca. 1786–1806) "The walls depicted here were erected in the twelfth century to defend Tivoli, an ancient town twenty miles east of Rome. The evident directness of observation and the fact that it was painted largely wet-into-wet indicate that this work was the product of a single plein-air outing.
A similar view, with the same trees towering behind the walls, and round hills in the distance, is the subject of another oil study in The Met’s collection, one attributed to Pierre Henri de Valenciennes or a painter in his circle (2009.400.112)." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
