About Artwork: (probably 1577) "Tintoretto’s painting included key features that appealed to El Greco when he arrived in Venice, including dramatic postures set in complex architectural space, loose paint handling, and a high-keyed palette. This oil sketch was preparatory for a much larger painting intended for the doge’s palace, a reminder that part of what El Greco experienced for the first time in Venice were canvases of enormous scale. El Greco initially adopted the perspectival structures of such compositions, but soon abandoned these after arriving in Spain." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
