"Like a number of other artists of his time, Carlsen was impressed by the still lifes of Jean Simeon Chardin, the eighteenth-century French painter whose work was revived at the end of the nineteenth century. Carlsen studied these works intently during the early 1880s and produced a number of works emulating Chardin's style." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
