Autumn Oaks

Artist: George Inness (American, 1825–1894)

Original Dimensions: 20 3/8" x 30 1/8"

Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

About Artwork: (ca. 1878) "Inness’s style underwent major shifts in the 1870s. The artist spent the early part of the decade painting in Italy, where he was in close contact with a group of artists centered around the American painter Elihu Vedder. Autumn Oaks indicates this departure from his early, crisply detailed style to a more expressive mode. In the later part of the decade, Inness began to write increasingly about the spiritual and scientific aims of his paintings, deeply influenced by the eighteenth-century philosophical writings of Emanuel Swedenborg." - (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
