About Artwork: (1907) "Thoma once said, "Nature often spoke to me as if in the words of a Psalm." The grazing sheep and the women in old-fashioned dress tending a baby evoke the traditional symbolism of the infant Christ. The artist earned prominence in Germany at the turn of the century with depictions of his native landscape that are suffused with spiritual and folkloric allusions.
