The story is told in Book 10 of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Venus falls in love with the youth Adonis when Cupid accidentally wounds her with one of his arrows. She goes hunting with Adonis but tells him not to pursue the fiercer prey (wolves, bears, lions and boars). One morning when Venus sets out in her sky-borne chariot, Adonis’s hounds rouse a wild boar, which turns on him. Venus hears Adonis’s groans, leaps from her chariot and finds him dying. From her lover’s blood she creates a fragile flower whose petals are scattered in the wind, named anemone (‘wind flower’ in Greek).

This picture is one of many versions of the subject painted by Titian and his studio. The most famous was delivered in 1554 to Prince Philip, later King Philip II of Spain, and is now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. The National Gallery’s canvas was probably painted by an artist in Titian’s workshop, following his by then established design." - (National Gallery of Art, London)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/3934/0401/files/VenusandAdonis_82da78ef-f74a-4918-aef5-b07fe7f73b6c.jpg?v=1787542500
von-soest-saints-ambrose-exuperius-and-jerome-ngal1790
Von Soest Saints Ambrose Exuperius and Jerome

Artist: Workshop of Master of Liesborn Johann (German, active c. 1465 - 1490)

Original Dimensions: 47 1/4" x 26 3/4"

Location: National Gallery of Art, London

About Artwork: (Likely early 1480s-1490) "This panel once formed the left shutter of an altarpiece in the Benedictine abbey at Liesborn in north-west Germany. Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, appears on the left in liturgical dress, including a mitre (hat) and a crosier which, as it resembles a shepherd’s crook, symbolises his role as shepherd of Christians. Saint Exuperius is shown in armour, a reference to his role in the Theban legion of the Roman army; its members all converted to Christianity in the fourth century. God the Father, a small figure radiating light, appears in the sky above. The image of the Virgin and Christ Child in a garden was derived from the poetic imagery of the Song of Solomon, a book of the Old Testament. In it, a woman is described as a lily and a rose as well as an enclosed garden (which, when associated with Mary, came to symbolise her virginity).

This painting was probably made by members of Dürer’s workshop. It includes flowers that are derived from his detailed watercolour studies of the natural world – one of his particular artistic preoccupations – many of which would have been available in the workshop. Each floral element had theological significance: the iris and the rose were associated with the Virgin’s ‘Seven Sorrows’, while the grapevine with large leaves and delicate tendrils was a symbol of the Eucharist (when Christians drink wine at Mass in remembrance of Christ)." - (National Gallery of Art, London)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/3934/0401/files/The_Virgin_and_Child_The_Madonna_with_the_Iris.jpg?v=1787542531
the-virgin-and-child-with-saint-anne-ngal1769
The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne

Artist: Workshop of Albert Cornelis (Belgian, c. 1475 - 1532)

Original Dimensions: 16 1/8" x 12 1/8"

Location: National Gallery of Art, London

About Artwork: (Possibly about 1520) "The Virgin, Christ Child and Saint Anne, the Virgin’s mother, sit in a small ‘paradise’ garden. The building behind him, a bell on its roof, might be his hermitage.

The style and technique of this painting are close enough to that of Saint John on Patmos, also in the National Gallery’s collection, to justify an attribution to the same workshop, although not to the same artist." - (National Gallery of Art, London)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0663/3934/0401/files/SaintChristophercarryingtheInfantChrist_58503f97-76d6-49f2-8198-c8dce8f74144.jpg?v=1787542533
the-magdalen-ngal1767
The Magdalen

Artist: Workshop of the Master of 1518 (not listed, Active early 16th century)

Original Dimensions: 20 3/4" x 13 3/4"

Location: National Gallery of Art, London

About Artwork: (Before 1524-6) "Saint Mary Magdalene stands behind a stone ledge and holds her attribute – the pot of oil with which she anointed Christ’s feet. A blind man approaches from the right, assisted by a young boy; a mother and child directly in front of Saint Anthony reach out to the saint with urgency. Interpreting the symbolism, however, is difficult. We see a young man, upright and slightly aloof as he turns his head to look us directly in the eye.

The figure may be based on a book of iconology by Cesare Ripa which was published around this time. It includes an illustration of a sumptuously dressed woman wearing a wreath and breastplate and carrying a sceptre, and is captioned as Merit. If this was de Poorter’s intention here, then we might understand the image as an embodiment of Merit assuming worldly power, and so representing the Just Ruler. He stands literally enlightened by the sunshine from the high window, the sceptre indicating his authority; the crowns, his regal status; the cuirass (breastplate) his strength. Leda, the wife of the king of Sparta, was loved by the god Jupiter (Zeus in Greek) who transformed himself into a swan and seduced her. As a consequence she gave birth to the twins Castor and Pollux, who were hatched from eggs. This small erotic painting was clearly intended for a patron’s private enjoyment. The subject had been popular in art since the Renaissance: a painting of the subject by Michelangelo, of which Leda and the Swan (also in the Gallery’s collection) is a copy, was widely known through a sixteenth-century engraving. The fourth member of their party has put down his violin and twists to reach out to a woman, who bends over responsively as her male companion looks on, apparently startled. The group anticipates the eighteenth-century fêtes galantes (‘courtship parties’) made famous by the artist Jean-Antoine Watteau. In what is a relatively small painting – not by Wouwerman himself but produced in his studio – the artist has crammed in at least 14 of them, charging, stumbling, tumbling and wheeling across the canvas.

Despite this crowded field, more than half the picture is taken up with a smoke-filled sky, used to underscore this frozen moment of violence, with a series of dramatic silhouettes of swords, flags, guns and rearing horses.

Wouwerman’s war paintings did not usually depict identifiable conflicts, but another version of this picture (State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg) has been described as a battle between Poles and Swedes. The horsemen advancing from the left have red flags, coats, hats or capes – a colour associated with Poland – while their opponents, apparently in retreat, seem to wear the blue of Sweden. The two countries were at war from 1655 to 1660." - (National Gallery of Art, London)

Artist: Studio of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, 1780 - 1867)

Original Dimensions: 21 3/8" x 17 3/4"

Location: National Gallery of Art, London

About Artwork: (After 1842) "This head and shoulders portrait is based upon a three-quarter length portrait of the Duc d’Orléans (1810–1842), the eldest son of King Louis Philippe and heir to the French throne, which Ingres completed in 1842. Following the Duke’s death in a carriage accident in July the same year, Ingres was instructed to make copies of the portrait. The original was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1816, and Lawrence considered it one of his best works. Angerstein was Lawrence’s friend and patron for over 30 years. Lawrence first painted him in 1790 (National Gallery, London), when Angerstein was 55 and Lawrence was about 20. Angerstein was a businessman and philanthropist, ‘much respected for his good heart and intentions’ as well as his effective fundraising for worthy causes. He was also a passionate collector of paintings, and after his death in 1823 the British government purchased 38 paintings from his collection to form the basis of a National Gallery. King George IV expressed his wish to have a replica of the portrait. Lawrence borrowed the original from Angerstein’s son, John, who had inherited it, and made this copy for the King." - (National Gallery of Art, London)

Artist: Sir Thomas Lawrence (British, 1769 - 1830)

Original Dimensions: 55 3/8" x 43 1/2"

Location: National Gallery of Art, London

About Artwork: (1825) "This portrait of Charles William Lambton - aged six or seven - was commissioned by the boy’s father John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, a Whig politician and MP for County Durham. Popularly known as The Red Boy, it remained in the Lambton family until it was acquired by the National Gallery in 2021. It is acknowledged as one of Thomas Lawrence’s masterpieces and, a sign of the image’s enduring popularity, it was the first painting to be reproduced on a British postage stamp in 1967.

Sitting on a promontory overlooking a moonlit sea, Lawrence portrays Lambton as a child wanderer, lost in contemplation of the sublime power of nature. The flowers opening next to him symbolise his young age. He is at the beginning of his journey through life, though this was cut short - he died of tuberculosis aged only thirteen. Lawrence may have been inspired by the work of Lord Byron or by William Wordsworth’s poem There was a Boy (1798).

Unlike Gainsborough’s famous portrait, The Blue Boy (1770, The Huntington Art Museum, San Marino) who wears a seventeenth-century ‘Van Dyck’ costume, The Red Boy is dressed in the contemporary children’s fashion of loose-fitting clothes. Several of Lawrence’s young sitters wear these red velvet ‘skeleton suits’ which were roomier and better for playing outdoors and which, by 1800, had replaced Van Dyck dress for children of wealthy families." - (National Gallery of Art, London)
